Staying Sober During Summer Celebrations: Tips for Navigating Parties, Vacations, and Holidays
By: The Second Chances Team
Summer is a season filled with celebrations. From 4th of July cookouts and family vacations to weddings, concerts, and backyard barbecues, there are plenty of opportunities to spend time with friends and loved ones. While these events can be enjoyable, they can also present unique challenges for individuals in recovery.
At Second Chances, we know that preparation is one of the best tools for protecting your sobriety. With a plan in place, you can enjoy summer while staying committed to your recovery goals.
Plan Ahead Before You Go
One of the best ways to reduce stress is to think ahead. Before attending a party or event, consider what situations might be challenging and how you will respond.
Ask yourself:
-
-
- Will alcohol or other substances be present?
- Who can I call if I need support?
- How long do I want to stay?
- Do I have my own transportation if I decide to leave early?
-
Bring Your Own Beverage
Many summer gatherings revolve around alcohol, but that does not mean you have to feel left out. Bringing your favorite non-alcoholic drink gives you something to enjoy while helping avoid questions about why you’re not drinking.
Stay Connected to Your Support System
Whether it is a sponsor, therapist, trusted friend, or family member, staying connected can make a big difference. If you know you will be attending a potentially triggering event, check in with someone beforehand and plan to follow up afterward.
Give Yourself Permission to Say No
Not every invitation needs to be accepted. If a gathering feels like it may put your recovery at risk, it is okay to decline. The people who truly support your recovery will understand your decision.
Have an Exit Plan
Even with the best intentions, some situations may become uncomfortable. If you begin feeling overwhelmed or triggered, give yourself permission to leave. Driving yourself to the event or arranging your own transportation gives you the flexibility to leave whenever you need.
Remember, summer can be a rewarding season in recovery when you approach it with preparation and support. By planning ahead and prioritizing your well-being, you can enjoy holidays, vacations, and celebrations without compromising your sobriety. You got this!
