One Step at a Time: Moving Forward in Recovery
By: Tina Bass
Recovery is a road measured not by speed, but by perseverance. The journey is different for everyone, yet one truth remains: the distance never changes. Whether it takes one attempt or several, the path to healing is always there, waiting for those who are willing to take the steps.
For a long time, I struggled with the speed of my growth. Hardships seemed to push me forward, but never as fast as I wanted. My mind was trapped in a reality of fear and pain, and my heart felt like it was constantly being broken and reshaped. I remember the deep sorrow I felt for my actions and the person I had become. I wanted to change, but I had no idea how to do so. Fear of the unknown held me back.
Recovery is unique for everyone. What works for one may not work for another, but one thing remains constant — the 12-step program. It may take several tries, or it may click the first time. The key is to never give up, because giving up means risking everything. When I finally surrendered, admitted my powerlessness, and placed my trust in something greater than myself, I found freedom from self-destruction.
Now, I no longer live just to die; I live with purpose. Each scar, each struggle, and each triumph is something I offer to others who are on their journeys.
For those still struggling, here is my advice:
- Be honest with yourself. Acknowledge where you are and what needs to change.
- Surround yourself with support. Whether it’s a sponsor, a counselor, or a community, don’t walk this road alone.
- Celebrate small victories. Every step forward matters, no matter how small.
- Stay committed. Even if you stumble, pick yourself back up and keep going.
Your journey is yours, and no one can walk it for you. Keep pushing forward, one step at a time.
